Abstract
Objective: To study the prevalence of facial fractures in women over a 1-year period in the major hospitals of Malaysia.
Materials and Methods: We carried out prospective registration of all eligible cases presenting to 23 Ministry of Health hospitals throughout Malaysia. A pro forma was developed for this purpose and circulated among the target hospitals.
Results: In total, 263 women with 298 fractures were documented. The most frequently involved age group was 20 to 29 years. The main cause of injury was road traffic accidents, followed by falls and assaults. The most common bone involved was the mandible, followed by the zygoma.
Conclusion: Of all the fracture cases observed in a 1-year period, 14% occurred in women.
